A Road Trip to Remember: East Coast Adventures with James and Our Dogs
Over the past nine days, James and I took an unforgettable road trip out east with our two beloved dogs, Layla (13 years old) and Willow (1 year old). Our adventure was meticulously planned on a specific budget, and Hipcamp became our go-to for unique and affordable accommodations. The main destination was Washington, DC, for James' brother's wedding, but we decided to turn the trip into an extended journey up the East Coast, soaking in as many sights and experiences as possible.
Our journey began in the charming town of Mt. Carroll, IL, our home. Then off we went to drive through the states of Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont, each state offered its own unique charm and beauty.
Washington, DC: A Capital Experience
Our first major stop was Washington, DC. The wedding was beautiful, but exploring the city was a highlight. We rented e-bikes and cruised around downtown, a cost-friendly and fun way to see the sights. The National Mall, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Monument were breathtaking.
New York: The City That Never Sleeps
From DC, we headed to New York City. The energy of the city was infectious. We stopped at Liberty State Park to catch a stunning view of the Statue of Liberty. The sight of Lady Liberty standing tall against the skyline was awe-inspiring. Layla and Willow enjoyed a romp in the park, their tails wagging with excitement.
Fairfield, Connecticut: Sunrise by the Sea
One of our most serene stops was in Fairfield, Connecticut, where we stayed at a quaint beach resort. Waking up early to watch the sunrise over the Atlantic was a moment of pure bliss. The sky painted in hues of orange and pink was a sight to behold, and walking along the beach with the dogs was the perfect way to start the day.
Rhode Island: Lobster and Lighthouses
In Rhode Island, we visited Judith Point, famous for its picturesque lighthouse and fresh lobster. The taste of the lobster was unforgettable, a true culinary delight. We watched the waves crash against the rocky shore, and the lighthouse stood as a silent guardian over the waters.
Maine: Wilderness Retreat
Driving up to our yurt in Maine, tucked away in a 9,000-acre forest, was an adventure in itself. Our host, Cliff, greeted us warmly and took us on a 10-minute walk to a secluded spot where we watched the sunset over a tranquil lake. The peace and solitude of the forest were a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the cities we had visited.
Cambridge, New York: A Romantic Getaway
Our stay in Cambridge, New York, was nothing short of magical. We booked a tiny home made mostly of windows, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The see-through roof allowed us to stargaze from the comfort of our cozy bed. It was the perfect romantic retreat, and even our dogs seemed to enjoy the serenity.
Niagara Falls: Nature’s Majesty
Our final major stop was Niagara Falls, where we stayed at The Giacomo Ascend, the only dog-friendly hotel we could find. The falls were even more majestic than I had imagined. The roar of the water was deafening, and the sight was breathtaking. Standing at the edge, I spread my mom's ashes, feeling a profound sense of peace. We also took the Maid of the Mist boat tour, getting soaked by the mighty falls—a thrilling experience.
To make our visit even more memorable, we walked over the bridge and crossed into Canada. The view of the falls from the Canadian side was spectacular, offering a different perspective on this natural wonder. We strolled through the streets, taking in the vibrant atmosphere, and eventually found ourselves at the Hard Rock Cafe. Enjoying a drink there was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. The energy of the place, combined with the incredible views, made it a highlight of our trip.
Homeward Bound
The next morning, we packed up and began the long drive back home. The journey was long, but our hearts were full. We had created memories that would last a lifetime, and our bond with Layla and Willow grew even stronger.
This road trip wasn't just about the destinations; it was about the journey, the experiences, and the time spent together. From the bustling streets of New York City to the serene forests of Maine, every moment was a chapter in our adventure. If you ever get the chance, pack your bags, hit the road, and see where the journey takes you. You won't regret it.
